Riassunto
This article addresses the conditions provided by a second chance school to facilitate young adults’ re‐engagement in education. Early school leaving (ESL)1 today represents one of many issues faced by young adults in the transition to upper secondary education and vocational education and training (VET). It is accompanied by other major life changes such as moving from school to work, starting a family and possibly re‐engaging in school (Santos, Macedo, & Araújo, 2018). Some studies have emphasised that financial constraints and a lack of interest in schoolwork have led many students to experience a sense of powerlessness and incited them to seek work and hence leave education early (Hattam & Smyth, 2003). Therefore, researchers and educational practitioners should contribute to a renovation of school work that provides young adults with a second chance in education (COM, 2013). This implies commitment and responsibility for the provision of a socially‐just second chance schooling. According to Bills, Cook and Giles (2015, p. 79), this ‘renovation must address the economic and relational dimensions behind young people’s decisions to leave in the first place’. By recognising young adults’ profiles and the life circumstances that interfere with their learning, the arts‐based approach of the school, together with the reinforcement of emotional bonds, represent useful tools for supporting their transition back to education and the educational paths that follow.
